Our commitment
NYC Subletting is built and operated by Strategic Housing LLC. Finding housing in New York is hard enough without the tools being unusable, and we want this site to work for everyone — including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or reduced motion.
Standard we work to
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. This is an ongoing effort rather than a finished state: we are a small team, the site changes often, and we find and fix issues as we go.
What we've done so far
- A skip link so keyboard users can bypass the navigation
- Text contrast checked against the WCAG AA thresholds
- Alternative text on images
- Form fields with associated labels and errors tied to the field
- Interactive elements reachable and operable by keyboard
- Animation suppressed for visitors who ask for reduced motion
- Layouts that work down to a 320px-wide screen
Known limitations
We'd rather be straight with you than claim perfection. Areas we are still working on include the roommate quiz and profile forms, which use custom controls that need further testing with assistive technology, and content posted by other users — listing descriptions and photos are written and uploaded by hosts, and we cannot guarantee their accessibility.
